Automatically Determining the Delivering Plant

The plant has a central function in the Logistics area. In SAP SD, it takes on the role of the delivering plant. During item processing, the SAP R/3 system tries to determine the relevant delivering plant automatically from the master data in SAP system. The entry can be changed manually at a later date.

The SAP system proceeds in accordance with the following search strategy:

• In the first search step, the system checks whether anything has been established in the customer-material info record.
• In the second search step, the system checks whether anything has been established in the customer master record for the ship-to party.
• The third search step checks whether anything has been established in the material master record.

If none of the search steps are successful, no delivering plant is set in the sales document item. As a rule the item can not be processed further without a plant. For example, there can be no automatic determining of the shipping point or automatic tax determination, no availability check can be carried out and no outbound delivery can be set up.

How the System Determines the Delivering Plant

You can enter the delivering plant in the customer master record and in the material master record. A value is proposed for the delivering plant according to the following criteria:

If the delivering plant is defined in … Then the SAP system proposes the delivering plant from …

• the material master only and the material master

• customer master only and the customer master (if the material has not been maintained for the plant in question)

• the material and customer master records and the customer master (if the material has not been maintained for the plant in question)

• the material and customer master records and the material master (if the material has not been maintained for delivering plant defined in the customer master)
