The shipping point is the organizational unit in the SAP R/3 system responsible for shipping processing. To be able to give the customer a delivery date for a material ordered, the system must take into account all of the necessary prelimary leg time for the different processes in shipping and transportation processing.

You can specify times that you need at the shipping point for preparing and loading goods. The shipping point is normally determined for each document item in the sales document. The automatic default value can be changed manually at a later date, if you wish to have alternative shipping points.

Shipping points are independent organizational entities within which processing and monitoring of the deliveries as well as goods issue is carried out. A delivery is processed by one shipping point only.

During item processing, the SAP R/3 system tries to determine the relevant delivering plant automatically from the master data in SAP system. The entry can be changed manually at a later date.

The SAP system proceeds in accordance with the following search strategy:

• In the first search step, the system checks whether anything has been established in the customer-material info record.
• In the second search step, the system checks whether anything has been established in the customer master record for the ship-to party.
• The third search step checks whether anything has been established in the material master record.
